A Celebration of 100 Years of Rugby at Guildford
On 30th September 1922, 15 eager chaps from Guildford took on 15 more from Dorking at Stoke Hill Farm in the first Rugby Match to be played by Guildford RFC. We know little more about the fixture itself or the chaps that played (other than unfortunately Dorking won 11 – 9) but we do know that that ‘friendly’ encounter almost 100 years ago need celebrating.
Because that Club – under its several different guises - was the start of what has happened every year since, something that we continue to do every Saturday and Sunday to this day – play Rugby for Guildford RFC.
2022/23 Season saw the 100th anniversary of that game and the Club intended to ensure we remembered it well and celebrated accordingly. People plannd events throughout the Centenary Season with Anniversary Games, Youth Festivals, Sectional Dinners and a special Centenary Golf Day to celebrate. A commemorative Book has been written and it is possible to purchase from the club.
But this is only worthwhile if you and yours take part.
The club would like to thank Michael O’Sullivan on his tireless efforts and meticulous planning with his committee to bring together all the events into a fantastic season of celebration.
The First 100 Years were excellent, now lets prepare the Next 100 Years.
